Equipment Available
Notwithstanding the minimum requirements for Personal Buoyancy outlined below, the Duty Officer may specify any of the following items of PPE that are, in their view, necessary. The nature of the centre means that many Scouts will own their own equipment. Instructors or group leaders should advise the DO of any concerns relating to their group.
Personal Buoyancy: The table below sets out the Scout Associations requirements for personal buoyancy as laid down in FS120603 (https://www.scouts.org.uk/volunteers/running-your-section/programme-guidance/information-for-volunteers/general-activity-guidance-a-z/water-safety-buoyancy-aids-and-lifejackets/) . The requirements below are for operations within the area of Molesey Lock to Trowlock Island. Outside of this area or normal conditions, higher requirements may be necessary and the DO should consult the factsheet for minimums.
With the sole exception of undertaking maintenance on a vessel secured alongside, the centre requires these standards to be met when any individual passes the small concrete wall on the shore by the pontoon, operates in the water at the end of the slip way or is in any other way on the margins of the water.
Where a buoyancy aid is specified, a lifejacket may be substituted with the agreement of the DO, There is an increased risk of entrapment with a lifejacket that must be considered.
Not withstanding the requirements, all are reminded of the RNLI’s position on personal buoyancy: USELESS UNLESS WORN and the importance of role models for Scouts.
Personal buoyancy is no substitute for proper discipline and correct training.
More information with regard to personal buoyancy can be found at: https://rnli.org/water-safety/lifejackets
Group Equipment
The DO may specify additional equipment to be carried by a group. The table below sets out options available, and the considerations when approving the use of personal equipment.
